Pan African Nurse Anesthetists Conference Grants (2024)
Sponsored attendees for the First Pan African Nurse Anesthetist Conference bringing together nurse anesthetists, anesthesia providers, policy makers, and representatives from international agencies, non-governmental organizations, pharmaceutical & equipment manufacturers, and donors from 18 African countries.
The conference focused on strengthening quality life-saving anesthesia care for pregnant women. The three-day event spotlighted key issues including availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of anesthesia care for the most vulnerable and under-served population.
Uganda Nurse Anesthesia Degree Grants (2023)
Provided two $1200 grants to nurse anesthetists in Uganda for tuition and rooming for their first semester of a Bachelor's in Nurse Anesthesia degree, committing to fund their entire 2-year program. Recipients: Solotiinah Nyirantungane and Tamwendawo Forence.
Vanderbilt Institute of Global Health and HVO Grants (2023)
A $1000 grant was given to the Vanderbilt Institute of Global Health in the name of anesthesiologist Dr. Mark Newton for his contribution to global health through the establishment of a nurse anesthesia educational program in Kenya. An additional $1000 grant was donated to Health Volunteers Overseas in honor of our most recent board member, Janet Dewan and her contributions to global nurse anesthesia programs, education of students, faculty, and nurse anesthetists. This grant was directed to be used in HVO's Rwanda project.
Mohamed Abdi Bilaahi's Public Health Master's Grant (2023)
Provided a grant to Mohamed Abdi Bilaahi (Somaliland) to fund the balance of his Master's degree in Public Health and Nutrition.
Gambia Nurse Anesthesia Program (2022)
Funded Ebou Cham of Roots Health Services for the development of a nurse anesthesia program in Gambia, including curriculum development and faculty leadership. Designated as the 2022 Ronald Caulk Memorial Grant.
Mohamed Suddam and Naphtal Ndutiye Grants (2022)
Funded Mohamed Suddam (Kenya) for nurse anesthesia educational program tuition and provided a grant for Naphtal Ndutiye (Rwanda) to attend an anesthesia continuing education meeting in Kigali, Rwanda.
Napthal Ndutiye's Scholarship (2018-2022)
Awarded a scholarship to Napthal Ndutiye for a nurse anesthesia educational program in Rwanda, completed in February 2022, overcoming delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cameroon Association of Nurse Anesthetists (2021)
Awarded the 2021 Ron Caulk Memorial Grant to the Cameroon Association of Nurse Anesthetists for purchasing ACLS training equipment.
Lorba Tulay's Laptop Grant (2021)
Provided a grant to Ms. Lorba Tulay (Liberia) for a laptop to complete her Master's degree research. Lorba graduated in 2021 and is an educator at the Phebe Nurse Anesthesia Program in Liberia.
Mary Mungai's Master's Scholarship (2019)
Sponsored Mary Mungai from Kenya as the Ron Caulk Memorial Scholarship recipient, enabling her to complete her Master's in Nursing Education from the University of Glasgow.
Lorba Tulay's Master's and Laptop Grants (2018-2019)
Sponsored Ms. Lorba Tulay from Liberia for a Master's in Nursing Education in 2018 and provided an additional grant for a laptop to support her research project.
Ron Caulk Memorial Scholarship (2018)
Inaugural scholarship granted to Muhamed Abdi Bilaal from Somaliland to attend the World Congress of Nurse Anesthetists in Hungary. Sponsored Mohamed to the Uganda Anaesthetic Officers meeting after VISA denial.
Ronald Caulk Memorial Award
The Ronald Caulk Memorial Award honors Ron Caulk’s legacy of service to global nurse anesthesia and his commitment to supporting those who advance the profession around the world.

Ronald F. Caulk, CRNA, FAAN, demonstrated “dynamic leadersip with strong convictions”. He served as American Association of Nurse Anesthetists ( AANA) president (1977-1978) and became a pivotal force in global nurse anesthesia leadership. He was among the visionary founders of the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists (IFNA). From its inception in 1989 till his reitrement in 2004, Ron actively led IFNA as vice preidient, president and executive director.

Ron Caulk passed away in 2016. His vision for global nurse anesthesia unity and progress lives on. In 2017, to honor his legacy, Our Hearts Your Hands (OHYH) established the Ronald Caulk Memorial Award to support nurse anesthetists who further the values Ron embodied.
